How to Get Started with Pickleball: A Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time Players
So, you’re curious about pickleball but not sure where to begin? You’re not alone—and the good news is, starting is a lot easier (and more fun) than you might think. At Paddle Up, we welcome new players every day, and this guide is here to walk you through everything you need to know before your first game.
📝 Step 1: Learn the Basics (It Won’t Take Long)
Pickleball rules are refreshingly simple—perfect for first-timers.
- Serve underhand across the court into your opponent’s service zone
- Only the serving team can score points
- First to 11 wins, but you must lead by at least 2 points
- The area near the net is called the kitchen—you can’t volley there
Don’t worry if that still sounds a bit confusing. Our on-site staff will guide you through the rules, and you’ll pick them up quickly by playing.
🛒 Step 2: Gear Up the Easy Way
No need to invest in a ton of gear on day one.
- Rent a paddle from us if you’re trying it out
- Buy your own paddle for RM150 when you’re ready
- Bring or buy your own ball at the counter
- Wear sportswear and non-slip shoes (especially for outdoor courts)
That’s all you need. No special uniform or heavy equipment—just show up ready to move.

🗓️ Step 3: Book a Court
Booking a session is super simple:
- Visit our website and select your time slot
- Or call us directly at [Counter No]
- Courts are available from 10am to 12am daily
Weekday off-peak slots (before 6PM) are more relaxed—perfect for beginners. You can also join beginner sessions if you’re unsure about going solo.
👫 Step 4: Bring a Friend or Meet New Ones
Pickleball is usually played in doubles, which means:
- You can invite a friend and learn together
- Or let us help match you with other players on-site
You’ll find that the pickleball community is extremely welcoming. Many players are happy to guide beginners and share tips.
🧠 Step 5: Practice, Laugh, Improve
The beauty of pickleball is how fun it is—even when you’re just learning.
- Don’t stress about scoring at first
- Focus on movement, getting the ball over the net, and having fun
- As you improve, try out our social nights or leagues for more play time
Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, some casual fitness, or a great way to meet people, pickleball checks every box. So what are you waiting for? Book your first session at Paddle Up and let’s get paddling!
